Ambassador Barry L. Wells held an award ceremony on Wednesday, May 21 in honor of Dr. Isatou Touray, Executive Director of GAMCOTRAP, Embassy Banjul’s nominee for the 2008 Secretary of State’s Award for International Women of Courage. In his remarks, Ambassador Wells stressed that poverty increases  when women lack education and economic opportunity; justice is thwarted when women are denied the right to play a political role in their nations, and no country can achieve lasting success, stability and security if half of its population is sitting on the sidelines. Therefore, he said, we are encouraged by the leadership of women of The Gambia at all levels in the governance of the nation. In accepting the award, Dr. Isatou Touray thanked the Embassy of the United States of America and the American Government for initiating such a very important award for recognizing deserving women who have the courage to take initiatives effecting change for people in their various communities. She accepted the award in honor of GAMCOTRAP, all of its members, and the community-based facilitators who have been engaged in the struggle for promoting women and children’s rights. The luncheon was attended by members of GAMCOTRAP, National Assembly members, religious leaders, and the press.

The award helped to emphasize the U.S embassy’s willingness to support women’s empowerment and development in The Gambia.  The award ceremony received extensive coverage on the Gambian national TV and radio stations and the story was carried in all the major newspapers.
