Ambassador Barry L. Wells handed over a milling machine on Tuesday, May 20 to the village women of Sohm in Western Region, as pasrt of the Ambassador’s Self-Help Program. In his remarks, Ambassador Wells informed the gathering that the milling machine the villagers requested will help the women with their daily work and generate some income for them to invest in other development projects.  He emphasized that maintaining it well will keep it operational for a longer period.  Other speakers were the district chief Alhagi Basiru Jarju, Alkalo Lamin Jarju, National Assembly Member Lamin Bojang, and Project Coordinator Ebrima Sanyang.  All of them expressed their gratitude and assured that the milling machines would be well-maintained. The ceremony was attended by virtually the entire village, as well as all the media houses and many dignitaries from the surrounding villages.

The ceremony helped to emphasize the U.S. embassy’s willingness to support women’s empowerment and development in The Gambia to the Ambassador’s Self Help Project.  The ceremony received extensive coverage on the Gambian national TV and radio stations and the story was carried on the front page in all the major newspapers.
