Opening remarks on Human Rights sensitization workshop for 25 National Assembly members

On April 24, 2008, Ambassador Barry L. Wells gave the opening remarks during a sensitization workshop for 25 National Assembly Members focused on women’s rights.  The opening ceremony was covered by journalists from both electronic and print media. The workshop was organized by the Africa Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies with funds from the Democracy and Human Rights Fund.  In delivering his remarks Ambassador Wells, emphasized the need to promote respect for human rights even more aggressively across all strata of society.  Other speakers at the opening ceremony were the Executive Director, Africa Center for Democracy and Human Rights, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Acting Solicitor General.

The workshop helped create more awareness of the issues of gender equity and the importance of gender sensitive policies among National Assembly members. The workshop received extensive coverage on the National TV station.
