Handing over Ceremony of MSSIS Project at the Naval Command Headquarters in Banjul

On Wednesday, April 30th, U.S. Ambassador Barry L. Wells handed over the newly installed Automatic Identification System (AIS) for the Gambian Navy at a ceremony held at the Naval Command Headquarters in Banjul.

During his official remarks, Ambassador Wells explained that the Maritime Security and Safety Information System (MSSIS) is an unclassified computer network system that provides the ability for any country in the area of responsibility to connect and become a contributing data-sharing partner with their neighbors, their region and the United States. A solar power system worth over $20,000 is also included, to serve as electricity back up for the MSSIS.  In conclusion, Ambassador Wells urged the Gambian Armed Forces to make good use of this project as it will help The Gambia better control her maritime security.  Speaking at the ceremony, Major General Lang Tombong Tamba, Chief of Defense Staff of the Gambian Armed Forces, reiterated that he is relieved and comfortable that his headquarters will now have the capability to monitor, through MSSIS, all maritime activities within Gambian territorial waters and beyond. The CDS, on behalf of Dr. Yahya Jammeh, The President and Commander in Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces, thanked the U.S. government, through Ambassador Wells for her support to the Gambia Armed Forces.
